Physics Department
Physics is key to the fundamental understanding of natural and technical processes. This discipline is therefore a component of many degree programmes at Esslingen University of Applied Sciences.
The restructuring of the university has meant that the lecturers working in this field have all moved to the new Faculty of Science, Energy and Building Services, where they form the newly established Department of Physics. They give physics-related lectures and laboratory courses in the engineering and industrial management degree programmes both within and outside their own faculty.
The lecturers are furthermore involved in the Natural Sciences & Technology Teacher Training Programme, which is offered together with the University of Tübingen and the Science Education Centre.
A key element in the profile of Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Laboratory, which has been in operation since 1977 and is now part of the Faculty of Science, Energy and Building Services. The laboratory undertakes measurements commissioned by the university as well as analyses for external industrial partners, and is involved in all kinds of research projects, too.
Research is also carried out in the department’s Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Laboratory. The first AFM instrument was commissioned in 2000. The laboratory equipment is always state of the art and this has gained it an outstanding reputation, not least through its close collaboration with a research group at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Stuttgart. It thus participates in national and international research projects as a partner on an equal footing.
Another, new field of work is the spectroscopy of semiconductor materials in the Optics Laboratory.
